Itinerary

August 19-20: Depart Venice, Italy. An overnight in Venice gives you and opportunity to enjoy its quaint cobblestone streets, vast squares, colorful markets, and Baroque architecture line the winding waterways. A center of art and music for centuries, with an inimitable air of intrigue and romance.
August 21: Split, Croatia. A famous beauty spot since the Roman Emperor Diocletian built his palace here. Today’s Split is the product of 1700 years of building and re-building. Narrow cobblestone streets lead you to pre-Romanesque churches alongside Gothic chapels, history-filled museums, contemporary art galleries, restaurants and charming cafés.
August 22: Kotor, Montenegro.
This lovely coastal town lies in the most secluded part of the Gulf of Kotor. The old port, surrounded by an impressive city wall, is well preserved and protected by UNESCO. Other sights include the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon in the old town (built 1166), and ancient walls that stretch directly above the city. Nightlife attracts visitors with taverns, cafes, and nightclubs.
August 23: Corfu, Greece/Sarande, Albania.
Corfu, whose beauty was celebrated by Homer, offers flower-strewn countryside and Adriatic-style villages, breathtaking coastal scenery and secluded beaches. Just across the strait, Sarande on its blue bay is gateway to fascinating attractions: Butrint Park, a trove of archeological and historical sites still being uncovered; ancient Gjirokastra, a UNESCO world heritage site; Lekuresi Castle on its towering hill, and more.
August 24: Katakolon, Greece.
This little fishing town is the entry port for the mystical site of Olympia, shrine to the Greek gods and the ancient birthplace of the Olympic Games originally held in their honor. Situated amid the lush green countryside, the ancient Greeks couldn’t have chosen a more suitable site for harmony of body and soul and the pursuit of physical excellence.
August 25: Santorini, Greece.
White houses clinging to the side of a volcanic caldera … the astonishing circular blue bay filling the ancient crater … beaches of white and red sand or black pebbles … this may the most photographed scenery in the world. The town and the whole island are also rich in sightseeing experiences, and shopping too. Take home some lovely handcrafted ceramics, paintings, jewelry.
August 26: Athens, Greece.
The grand finale: Athens, the Cradle of Western Civilization! A historian’s delight, Athens is home to such wonders as the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the great Archeological Museum, to name a few. It’s also a vigorous city of the present, with excellent shopping, good food, and vibrant café life. Don’t miss the Plaka, the delightful and historic no-traffic neighborhood full of artists’ shops and restaurants, in the shadow of the Acropolis.
