Itinerary

Oct. 19, 2010 - Depart Athens, Greece. The Acropolis, symbol of the birth of Western culture, rises from Athens’ modern bustle. Archeological wonders,  excellent shopping, great cafés.
Oct. 20 - Cruising the Mediterranean
Oct. 21-22 (overnight) - Ashdod, Israel.
Ashdod is mentioned in the Old Testament, and archaeologists have found ruins almost 4,000 years old. This is the doorway to the historic treasures of Jerusalem, and the worldly pleasures of Tel Aviv. An overnight stay allows visits to both.
Oct. 23 - Cruising the Mediterranean
Oct. 24-25 - Alexandria/Cairo, Egypt.
This port of Cairo has a romantic, untouristy charm all its own. In contrast Cairo’s pace first overwhelms; then the richness of human history, from the Pyramids to medieval Muslim markets, draws you in.
Oct. 26-27 - Cruising the Mediterranean
Oct. 28 - Valletta, Malta.
The island nation of Malta is a treasure trove of cultures. Valletta, its fortified main city, rises dramatically from the water. This "City of Knights," a monument to the past, was founded in 1566 by the Grand Master of the Knights of St. John. Sights not to be missed include the Magisterial Palace and St. John's Cathedral, which is lavishly decorated with the coats of arms and banners of the crusading knights. Free excursion for Jane Brody’s guests.
Oct. 29 - Sicily/Catania, Italy.
On a fertile plain surrounded by mountain slopes and the sea, Catania, the economic center of Sicily's richest area is nestled snugly in a hollow. Once an important Greek and Roman colony, it is now a thriving commercial and industrial center. Above the city rises Europe's largest volcano, mighty Mt. Etna. North, along the coast, picturesque Taormina warrants a visit.
Oct. 30 - Naples, Italy
Naples, the center of southern Italian commerce, is located on the scenic Bay of Naples. View a moment frozen in time at the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum, ancient cities buried by an eruption of nearby Mt. Vesuvius.
Oct. 31 - Disembark Rome, Italy.
Civitavecchia was founded by Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century. Today this port is noted for its fine seafood and attractive monuments. Located 90 minutes away is the Eternal City of Rome. Steeped in 2,500 years of history, Rome was for many centuries the center of Western civilization. It was both the focal point of the Roman Empire and of Christendom. Landmarks such as the Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Spanish Steps are reminders of the legacy of its rich past. More recently, the Rome of La Dolce Vita is ever present.
