Andy Avery & Robert Todd Luxury Transatlantic March 2019

Avery Todd 3-2019

Your Hosts

Andy Avery holds multiple bridge titles and became a Life Master in 1974. He has been featured in bridge articles including twice in Alan Truscott’s column in the NY Times and recently in Frank Stewart’s nationally-syndicated column. Andy teaches bridge at all levels. He firmly believes that a strong knowledge of the fundamentals of bridge is more important than learning and concentrating on conventions which require more memory but do not occur very often. Let’s hope Andy will have his guitar on board. He’s quite an entertainer!

Robert Todd is all over the country and the world playing and teaching bridge.  In 2010 Robert founded Adventures in Bridge, Inc., a group of young talented bridge players with whom he teaches and promotes the game. He teaches in person and online, plays with students from club games to world championships, hosts cruises and destination seminars, and writes for various publications. Robert has twice finished in the top 20 of the Barry Crane list, winning over 1500 masterpoints each of those years, and won the inaugural 0-10,000 Knockout Teams (“Mini-Vanderbilt”) at the Dallas NABC.

The Itinerary

March 25 - Embark Miami. Arrive early and enjoy the bustling nightlife, gorgeous beaches, museums, and fabulous shopping. Celebrity-drenched South Beach attracts people-watchers and the Art Deco District is the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world.

March 26 and 27 - cruising the Atlantic Ocean.

March 28 and 29 - King’s Wharf, Bermuda. Splendid Royal Naval Dockyard is filled with shops, museums, pubs and restaurants and is only a short ferry ride from Hamilton and St. George. Immerse yourself in the laid-back and amiable Bermuda atmosphere, whether you’re strolling through the charming shops or visiting the Maritime Museum.

March 30 to April 2 - cruising the Atlantic Ocean.

April 3 - Horta (Azores), Portugal. The volcanic islands of the Azores create a natural aquarium in the middle of the Atlantic between Europe and North America. Whale watching, sport fishing, paragliding, and yachting are popular pastimes. Stroll by the beautiful marina and stop in to legendary Peter Café Sport - a restaurant, scrimshaw museum, post office and necessary stop for all sailors.

April 4 - Ponta Delgada (Azores), Portugal. Savor the unparalleled natural wonders of this splendid volcanic island located at a crossroads in the Atlantic. See its stunning landscape, thermal pools, natural steam vents, volcanic lakes, subtropical flora, plantations and picturesque towns filled with perfectly preserved 17th and 18th century buildings.

April 5 - cruising the Atlantic Ocean.

torre bele mApril 6 - Funchal, Madeira Island, Portugal. Madeira is described as the “Island of Eternal Spring.” Entirely volcanic in origin, the soil combines with the mild climate to produce an abundance of green as well as multicolored vegetation. The rugged landscape, scenic fishing villages, magnificent vistas and ideal climate bring the island fame as a year-round resort. Before leaving this panoramic Atlantic isle, be sure to sample a glass of the famous Madeira wine.

April 7 - cruising the Atlantic Ocean.

April 8 - Disembark Lisbon, Portugal. On All Saints’ Day in 1755, a devastating earthquake destroyed much of the city. The Baixa (Lower City) was rebuilt on neo-classical lines that still form the heart of the city. The elegant ‘City of Explorers’ overlooks the River Tagus, and offers a number of distinctive neighborhoods to discover. Tour the Alfama, where the winding streets still retain much of their Moorish atmosphere. Stroll to Bairro Alto and hear the melodious sounds of Portugal’s Fado music. Nearby excursions transport you to the lavish 18th-century palace of Queluz and Sintra’s Royal Palace.
